A weekend spent over-engineering my coffee

Over-engineering my coffee with scales, brew ratios, and spreadsheets taught me the real optimum was just paying attention — a lesson in optimization's limits.

A weekend spent over-engineering my coffee
TL;DR the short pour

I built a spreadsheet to optimize my coffee, learned the optimum was “pay attention,” and had a great time anyway.

Not everything needs a return on investment. Some weekends are just for tinkering.

The setup

Scale, timer, a notebook, and far too many variables: dose, ratio, grind size, water temperature, pour pattern. I logged every cup for a week like it was a science fair project.

The finding

The single biggest factor was simply paying attention — being consistent and present beat any clever tweak. Which is, annoyingly, the lesson of most optimization.

A reminder that the personal stream here is exactly that: low-stakes, curiosity-driven, and cleanly separated from the work writing.
